Silent Huslers: Importance, drawbacks

Silent hustles have become an important part of daily life for many Nigerians, as individuals engage in modest and often overlooked jobs to earn a living and support their families.

These occupations, which include cleaning services, petty trading, farming, and other informal sector activities, may not attract public attention, but they play a significant role in sustaining households, reducing unemployment, and contributing to economic growth. Through their efforts, silent hustlers provide essential services and products that support communities and local economies.

Despite their importance, silent hustlers face several challenges. A resident identified financial instability as one of the major drawbacks, particularly for those working as cleaners and motel attendants. According to the resident, low and irregular income often makes it difficult for them to meet basic needs, save for the future, or expand their businesses.

Another resident described local farmers as some of the country's silent hustlers, noting that although they are vital to food production and national development, they often receive little recognition, inadequate support, and limited access to modern farming resources. These challenges can reduce productivity and discourage younger generations from taking up agriculture.

Stakeholders have therefore called for policies and initiatives that support small-scale workers, improve access to financial opportunities, provide social protection, and recognize the contributions of those whose efforts often remain behind the scenes. They stressed that empowering silent hustlers would not only improve their livelihoods but also strengthen the nation's economy and promote sustainable development.
