As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The Joint Association of People living with disability in Ondo State have called on the Government to use the COVID-19 pandemic opportunity to build back better health systems so that they are more inclusive and responsive to the needs and human rights of people experiencing disability in all their diversity.
Every 3rd of December is set aside for persons living with disability and the UN’s theme for this year's celebration is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World” while WHO supported this theme by underlining the importance of fostering an inclusive culture and responding to the urgent needs of people with disability in all aspects of society, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, in Ondo State, it was a low key celebration.
the Chairman, Ondo State Board of Agency for the welfare of persons with disabilities, Sanmi Elegbeleye who charged citizens to shun discrimination towards persons with disability, thanked Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for constituting the board for the disabled in the state.
On his part, Chairman of Albinos in Ondo State, Fagorola Ayodele, called on the government to give them palliatives in form of soft loan in order to cushion the effect of COVID-19 on them.
Earlier, the Special Assistant to the Governor on special Persons, Folasade Arise, called for more mechanisms in place to respond fully to the needs of people with disabilities.
Comrade Adams Surajudeen on his part, noted that Disabilityis part of the human experience, calling on well meaning Nigerians to always remember the disabled.
