Observed annually on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking seeks to raise awareness of the dangers associated with drug abuse and to encourage governments, communities, and individuals to work together in promoting a drug-free society.
Drug abuse remains a growing concern in many communities, especially among young people, with the misuse of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, tramadol, and other harmful drugs linked to health complications, addiction, poor academic performance, and increased criminal activities.
Some residents attribute the growing menace to peer pressure, unemployment, poverty, and the influence of social media, noting that many youths resort to substance abuse as a means of coping with economic and emotional challenges. Others identify poor parental guidance and the breakdown of family values as major factors encouraging drug use among adolescents.
Speaking on ways to curb the menace, the residents advocate increased public awareness campaigns in schools, religious centres, and communities. They also stress the importance of proper parental supervision, value reorientation, and counseling programmes to educate young people on the dangers of substance abuse.
As the world commemorates World Drug Day, many believe that with the combined efforts of parents, schools, communities, religious organizations, and government agencies, the rate of drug abuse among young people can be significantly reduced, paving the way for a healthier, safer, and more productive society.
