As the world marks World Environment Day on June 5, the Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing flooding and promoting environmental sustainability across the state.
World Environment Day is observed annually to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and encourage collective action towards protecting the planet. This year's celebration focuses on climate action and the need to build resilient communities in the face of growing environmental challenges.
Speaking on the state's preparedness for possible flooding during the rainy season, the Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, disclosed that the government has intensified measures aimed at reducing the impact of flooding in vulnerable areas.
According to the commissioner, ongoing efforts include the clearing of drainage channels, desilting of waterways, environmental sanitation campaigns, and public enlightenment programmes designed to improve environmental management and reduce flood risks.
Loko, however, noted that despite these interventions, flooding remains a recurring challenge in many communities due largely to human activities. He identified indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, construction of illegal structures on waterways, poor drainage infrastructure, and the effects of climate change as some of the major causes of flooding across the state.
The commissioner stressed that government efforts alone cannot completely address environmental challenges, emphasizing the need for active participation by residents and communities.
As part of activities marking World Environment Day, Loko urged Nigerians to adopt environmentally responsible practices such as proper waste disposal, tree planting, protection of natural ecosystems, and avoidance of activities that obstruct drainage channels.
He emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of all citizens, regardless of age or occupation.
The commissioner further called on residents of Ondo State to support government initiatives by embracing environmentally friendly habits, noting that preventing flooding and other environmental disasters begins with conscious actions taken at the individual and community levels.
He expressed optimism that with greater public cooperation and sustained environmental awareness, the state would be better positioned to mitigate the effects of flooding and other environmental threats.
