International Widows Day: "Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows"

International Widows' Day is observed annually on June 23 to raise awareness of the challenges widows face and to promote policies that protect their rights and well-being.

The day provides an opportunity to highlight the experiences of millions of widows worldwide who often face discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion following the loss of their spouses. It also serves as a reminder of the need for greater support systems and legal protections to ensure widows can live with dignity and security.

Speaking on this year's theme, "Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows," The Co-Founder of Girls and Women Empowerment Network International, Adesola Ajayi, said many widows continue to face significant social, economic, and emotional challenges, adding that some widows experience stigma, neglect, and unfair treatment from relatives and members of their communities. In contrast, others struggle to access inheritance rights and economic opportunities needed to support themselves and their families.

Ajayi urged widows not to lose faith despite the challenges they may encounter, adding that their rights are protected and they should speak out and seek justice.

As the world marks International Widows' Day, stakeholders continue to call for greater protection of widows' rights and increased efforts to ensure that every widow lives with dignity, justice, and economic security.
