On the backdrop of the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, with the theme focusing on shaping a peaceful future through the promotion of press freedom for human rights, development, and security, a veteran journalist, Akinwunmi Abodunde, has urged media organisations to work closely with civil society groups and human rights advocates in promoting press freedom and accountability.
While emphasizing the need for collective effort in safeguarding the integrity of journalism, Abodunde said that while press freedom exists, media professionals must remain vigilant, as challenges to free and responsible journalism persist.
On his part, Public Affairs analyst, Adeniran Obenbe, said concerns persist over challenges such as censorship, intimidation, and threats to journalists, which continue to hinder the effective practice of journalism.
While speaking on the way forward, Obenbe said achieving sustainable development and national security requires a media environment suitable for journalists to operate freely without fear, while upholding professionalism and ethical standards.
Stakeholders also called for stronger protections for journalists and policies that support a free, responsible, and independent press.
