International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Today marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, established by the United Nations in 1992 to raise awareness and inspire action to end poverty across the world.

Here in Nigeria, many citizens are, once again, voicing their frustration over the rising cost of living and the current economic hardship.

In related news, marking this year’s World Food Day, the Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving food sufficiency. The government says efforts are ongoing to support local farmers, boost food production, and help reduce poverty across the state.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has noted that poverty remains widespread in Nigeria. It estimates that more than 46 percent of Nigerians live below the poverty line, with food inflation hitting the poorest households the hardest, as many spend up to 70 percent of their income on food.

However, the Nigerian government has rejected this claim, saying the figures do not reflect recent interventions and ongoing economic reforms.
