Ahead of government election slated for 10th October 2020 in Ondo state, residents of the state have expressed their opinion in view of the coronavirus and the policy by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
When newsmen sampled people’s opinion on street, the residents expressed fears in view of the policy of safety ahead of the election.
Its no longer news that Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that the Ondo governorship election slated for 10th October, 2020 will hold, nothing that health authorities are putting in place guidelines ahead of the election.
Also, political parties are warming up to the race as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently released guidelines for governorship primaries in Edo and Ondo states. The PDP has fixed it’s gubernatorial primary for June 23 and 24 while APC fixed its primary, for 20th July 2020
However, residents of Ondo state including Mrs Osiko Funmilayo, Mrs Aderemi Kikelo among others have expressed divergent view on the need to postpone the election while others see no reason for it’s postponement.
A taxi driver, Mr. Adeyanju Ademola and a retired civil servant, Mr. Ifedayo Alonge also aired their opinions saying “I see no reason why the election shouldn’t hold. Last weekend, Local government elections were held in Benue and Cross River State, heaven did not fall”
However, an Akure based Legal Practitioner, Femi Emmanuel Esq says “though, COVID-19 is a tragedy but election is a constitutional issue that is time bound”.
He noted that “the third schedule of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, provides for the functions of INEC, power to organize, undertake and supervise all elections in Nigeria”.
