Traders and customers at the Obafemi Awolowo Market, Sagamu and Oba Adetona Market Oke-Aje, Ijebu-Ode, both in Ogun East Senatorial district of Ogun State, have thrown all safety protocols and directive put in place by the government to prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus to the wind.
The carefree attitude of the traders and customers in the ever bustling markets amid Coronavirus pandemic, was observed yesterday during routine monitoring of some of the major markets in the state by the organised labour unions including Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) among others.
The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State chapter, Emmanuel Bankole, lamented the low level of compliance, saying it was not satisfactory.
He said: “We still need to do a lot of work on our people. The awareness must be continuous at all levels of government. We don’t have the capacity if there should be serious problem concerning this COVID-19 pandemic.
The State chairperson of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Comrade (Nurse) Roseline Solarin, said it was really disheartening to see how people were not complying with all the regulations given by the government, despite knowing that the cost of prevention was always lower than that of cure or treatment.
